The following comments are not meant to sound rude...

Pro Engineer is not something you can learn correctly through reading books and free tutorials from websites.

It takes at least a week of intensive training from PTC and then several years of real use to become an effective user. In other words lots of time and money.

This forum exists to help users develop their skill and to share ideas, not to give away their ideas to people or suggest cheap ways to cut corners.

If you want to learn to use Pro E contact PTC and ask them about a basic course. If you then have questions that you really cannot get past by yourself, come back and I am sure many people will be glad to help.

By the way...free tutorials on websites will only provide basic help and are of little use.

There is no disrespect meant here, I just get fed up with people trying to learn how to use Pro E on the cheap and then rubbish it because the cannot use it properly.

Thanks a lot Hydromech for your reply. I was looking for someone who can help me out to learn the software and seams like you gave me a good reply probably the best.
Your right about the tutorials and books. But right now I cant afford for a training So I have to restrict myself to books and tutorials.
I am sure I wouldn't be really good in few weeks but I will try to practice a lot.
I know that if I have any questions that I really cannot get past by myself, I will post it in the forum and I am sure you or someone will definitely help me.

I find this site very helpful. Leo Greene is very helpful.
I hope this helps you, I have been working within ProE for 10 years and I can honestly say every day is a learning experience. If you can say you know everything about your job well then it is time to move on!
Good luck.

There is a student edition of Pro/E and other CAD programs available at

"Wildfires are dangerous, hard to control, and economically catastrophic."

You can signup for a Trial Edition Of Wildfire 5 that comes with a very basic intro tutorial but it will only last for 30 days. The student editions are unlimited except for some advanced functionality and compatability issues with the Professional version.

For a good site with tons of Pro/E Tutorials check out the following

There are several videos from Leo Greene here as well.

I learned some things in my trial of Wildfire 5 and it is a lot easier to use than the older editions given the reduction in the amout of times the program will yell at you. Known as "Resolve Mode" for us long time users.

The drawing mode is weird at first but if you are new to it it won't be to problematic to learn. Student editions run a year behind the Professional edition I believe that is true for autodesk Pro/Engineer and SolidWorks.

This is a good site too but please search the forums for existing posts before asking questions that have previously been addressed.

See if there is a Pro/USER group that meets in your area or a Contract Job House most of which have PCs with the software loaded and available for learning.

Thanks a lot Michael for your reply. Its a good site to learn and the tutorials are really handy. Thanks a lot again..!!!!

I used Solidworks for a few years, and then when I got downsized, called around and got a local VAR to send me a Demo CD of Pro-E so I could at least mention familiarity with Pro-E on my resume. It was good for 30 days, but allowed me to do some tutorials and get familiar with Pro-E and the differeences from other CAD packages I've used.
It came in handy, because on my next job, I was hired to use Solidworks, and after 6 months that contract got cancelled, and they got some more work that was in Pro-E. I was familiar enough with it to be able to jump in and hit the ground running, learning what I didn't know on the fly.
Learning as many CAD packages (even just a little) as possible, will definately make you more marketable, and hopefully more employeable.

I was in the same boat with solidworks - I recommend trying out your local adult school - they offered a whole mess of classes ranging from inventor to solidworks, autocad. I was unemployed living with my mom and forked over a few hundred from my savings and was able to touch all of them.

They have subsidized learning programs for adult schools but it will be worth it if you decide to invest_some_ money in it. gotta break a few eggs before you can make an omelet.

If you are already proficient with another CAD package, you probably can pick up PRO/E on your own, without training. Back when I learned WF3, I just jumped right in, modeling some random parts I had laying around. By searching forums like this one, and using simple web searches when I couldn't figure out how to do something I would normally do in another CAD package. By now I have a pretty high level of understanding of the software, and it has become my main CAD package (WF5 now).

If you are going to learn it on your own, make sure you explore features like the Parametric design early on, once you figure that out you will realize the advantages to PRO/E.
