Problem on Pumping Clean water

I need help....

recently my friend wants to pump clean water unto a 150 m tall hill or i say cliff since he built a small rest house near it... the problem is my friend bought pipes and pump and installed it... there was no flow at the top so he changed the pump with a quick search in the net on what should do.... the pump was replaced and when the pump was tured on.. the pipes exploded.... help... what is the proper procedure? sorry for bad english and grammar.

Your friend needs to work out what the pressure is at the base of the hill. Static pressure alone is 15bar / 220psi. Add some friction losses to that (he needs to know flowrate, size of pipe, total length) and you're probably looking at 20 bar with a bit of margin. This is beyond the rang of the thickest of most plastic / PVC pipes so I'm not surprised it "exploded". Also cast iron is not so strong either.

He will need some steel pipes for this duty I feel.

Oh and once you've done the calculations then get the right pump to match the duty. As he's discovered, if you use the wrong pump it either won't work or will damage something else.

Thnks for the response.... i'll take note on the pressures youve given.... i'm currently working on the calculations and there is really a lot to read on books... specially about pumps...

thats realyy a big help..... my friend and i are soo dumb hehehe we should have consulted first.....

btw.... should i include the losses on elbows? or the losses are too small to include?

If you have more than say 20m pipe per elbow then I wouldn't bother, but depends on how many elbows you have. Note that some small piping systems there are restrictions at each end of the elbow which can add up.

what type of pump should i use for clean water? since there are a lot of types.. it's confusing what are their disadvantages... does really matter what type of pump is used? the pump we used was a centrifugal i think...
 
The pump type will depend on the requirements for flow and pressure. What is the flow?
 
Assume cetrifugal for your duty.Small and cheap.
