Problem with SW freezing

I'm having a problem with the program freezing. This occurs at random times
and doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason to when it's going to happen.
For instance I'll perform a simple extrude and things just seem to freeze up.
If I hit the left mouse button, the spinning tine wheel comes on and stays that
way. If i hit escape or hit the left mouse button the window comes up that says
Solidworks is not responding. At that point I close it down. Also at the point when
in crashes.... the Temp File populates with over a hundred files which I then delete.
Any insights would be appreciated...I'm using 2015, service pack 3 Please let me know
if I can provide any additional info. Thank you for the help.

You've been around here long enough to know that we're going to ask for your system info...

Have you run SolidWorks Rx to see if there are any issues? From what you're describing, I'm leaning towards a graphics card issue.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for responding.
The computer is less than 3 years old (not brand new... but not a dino)

running windows 7 / 64 bit

Running an @Xi system
Intel Core i7 quad core processor, 3.5 GHz
16 gigs ram
Nvidia Quadro 2000 video card

This is issue has been happening the last 3 months or so. I tried reinstalling Solidworks and I thought
that fixed the issue...wasn't happening for a while... and just recently started up again.
Pretty sure the video driver is up to date... but I'll check again.

any other suggestions what to look for would be appreciated. Thanks
Is it possible to be a "Window's thing... I kind of doubt it... but thought I'd ask.

Is it only on certain files, or all of them?
Just to start...
If certain ones, check for references no longer available, complicated ref, or complicated surfacing.
If running on a server/network, any issues there?

Hi Chris,

I don't work with external references activated, so no referencing back to other parts / assemblies.
Running on a stand alone system (no network)

Complicated geometry... may be an issue. But not sure why it sometimes happens
and then not other times. For instance I was make a simple extrude cut through 2 parts in a multi body part.
It crashed. So I thought maybe that is a sign it doesn't like that. Started up again and did the same
operation to see if it happened again.... and then no problem. completed the operation.

Stumped... but it's a real drag.

I had a similar issue a couple months ago and found a bad stick of memory. The system (5 year old Xi) had 8gigs, but the system only showed 4 gigs of ram. We found the bad stick and replaced it and it was good to go.

Where it appears to be intermittent, I would suggest capturing an Rx of it. After the next crash, run SolidWorks Rx and select the option to get the data from previous session. While there won't be a video, there will be data you can send to your VAR.

You say it started three months ago. What changed then? Is that when you upgraded to 2015? If so, it's probably the video driver. Of all the releases I've installed, 2015 had the biggest impact on graphics drivers needing to be updated.

Diego... I tried your suggestion and performed a memory test. That was a good suggestion,
but everything seems to be good in that department.

Jeff, I tried doing an Rx session with the video.... but after working for a half hour, the computer
was behaving... and did not crash at all. I stopped it.... then after a while of working more... then it
did its crash thing. I may try that again. My next thing is investigating the graphics driver.

Thanks again for the suggestions. This is really quite a pain.

I went to the Diagnostic section of the SW Rx and there was
some red into saying the card/driver was ... (er... something)... not that it wasn't approved
but it was "undetectable"...or something like that.

I went to the SW site and downloaded an approved driver. Now when I go to Rx it is green
and says the card is supported and the driver is up to date.

Maybe this (hopefully) will help resolve the issue.

thanks again for the help.

John

SW 2015 for me has been very unstable even with the certified drivers. I actually downloaded the latest drivers from the Nvidia site and that helped more than anything else for me. I have found that when I do an exploded view that it will sometimes lock up, but that is about the only time I crash now.

Just an FYI in case you still have problems.

Thanks, Scott. Just a follow up.... I did update the video card driver... but still
have the freezing issue. This really has me baffled and it's really a PITA. Next step is
to try and record the problem using the Rx Video capture. Will follow up if I discover anything
else.
