Problem with Variable Pattern and Intersecting features

I'm a newbie here, so hopefully this isn't a new question. I've tried searching the board and didn't find anything.

I have an axis pattern that has a variable number of entries based upon the diameter I'm working on. The pattern is based on a fixed angular pitch. (The part is in a family-table sort of situation so we can have multiple parts stemming from the same model.)

Anyway, I'm having a problem, because what I'm trying to do is intersect the pattern with a part that is broken up, picture trying to drill a regular hole pattern but running into holes every now and then in the base part. So some features of my pattern are failing becuase there's nothing to cut through. I would like to be able to make this "semi-automatic" by being able to write relations to "turn off" a part of the pattern when it encounters a hole to avoid the failure, but I'm not having any luck.

Any advice out there?

Thanks in advance.

Try using a General pattern instead of Identical. If you use Identical Pro/E wants everything to be "identical" in the areas surrounding the patterned feature.
