I am interested in knowing if anyone is using a Laptop computer for AutoCAD, and specifically LDD. I have a MAC at home, and am considering the purchase of a PC Laptop so that I can practice LDD from home. I don't want the hassle of another desktop set up at home. Any recommendations on minimum RAM, Video Memory, and screen size? Thanks in advance...

Dear J Boucher;

I have often used AutoCad and Mechanical Desktop on a laptop at the jobsite. I generally dont need to create huge models on site, although modern laptops are certainly up to the task. A 14" screen size is not usually a big deal because most laptop screens are much sharper and clearer than your average desktop monitor. I have not used a 15" screen but I'm sure it would be fantastic.
You need 512 MB of memory for desktop 6 and probably for LDD. Its less expensive than it used to be.
My laptop video card is an 8 MB although newer models can be purchased with more. I have never had any big problems with 8 MB. If you are just practicing LDD you should be fine. If you are going to be rendering things or making animations with it you might have a problem though.

The biggest problem is security, laptops get stolen all the time, and your high powered CAD laptop is going to be an enormous temptation to thieves. Make sure you can lock it up !

Regards Adrian
