Good day,

As per client specification, the required raw material for wellhead equipment is AISI 4130 forged whereas vendor supplied us AISI 4130 rolled steel. Now, client has rejected our material. What is the difference between above two raw material product forms (rolled and forged)??

You can search this forum as this issue comes up often.

In short, it is expected that with a forging, the flow lines in the material will follow the countour of the part, but the same part machined out of bar stock can have the flow lines perpindicular to the part's contour. Since the material strength (particularly toughness) is often higher when loaded parallel to the flow lines (longitudinally) than perpindicularly to the flow lines (transverse), forged components can be superior.
