Quick Qestion:

I am currently working on a model of a tylenol tablet. I have the solid core modeled and need an easy way of adding a solid coating of various thicknesses to the outside of the core. They have to be separate so that the core and coating can be meshed separately.

Also, once i have both models done, what would be the best way to import this geometry into abaqus

Thanks in advance

Chris

That's interesting work..

How are the multiple thicknesses to be defined?

i.e. can you split core's surface into separate segments (using suface copy and trim tools) and then thicken them separately, or does the thickness change gradually?

If the latter, you may have to create a few offset surfaces to define the varying thicknesses, create curves onto these offset surfaces (using project, for example), and then creating boundary surfaces between these curves to define the gradient (tangent at the boundaries).

If you have ISDX (Style features) you can do a lot of this within the style tool.

You will then have to merge all of these quilts together. Take advantage of symmetry wherever possible.

After you've done that, copy the resulting merged surface to another part, along with a surface copy of the core. Solidify the coating surface first, then solidify the core (as a Cut).

The result should be a separate solid model which defines your coating. As for exporting this to Abaqus, I can only speculate that you should be able to export a mesh from Pro/Mesh (Applications-->Mechanica, check off FEM mode).

Hope it works..

Make a shell feature with a negative thickness. Voila, instant coating. Create family table, add the shell feature and the shell thickness to the table. The shell feature is suppressed in the tablet instance. Various instances of the coating have different shell thickness. Make assembly of the tablet & the shell.

Curosity is killing me. Literally a Tylenol tablet? To Abacus; (if you're free to say) why?
