We have a new requirement to slowly inject our slop oil back into the Crude unit charge versus batch transfer to Crude tanks. We are temporarily using a hose pump (Watson-Marlow)to inject. Hose last about 2 months. Flow is varied by VFD from 2 to 10 GPM. Due to trash in slop oil, we do not use a flow meter. Flow rate is monitored by tank level over time.

Question:
1) Would a Progressive cavity pump be better suited? Other recommendation on pump? (using a PD type so that flow can be controled by RPM. (flow meter / spillback valves that would just get plugged up.)
2)Vendos of PC pumps..Roper? Moyno? Roper is half the Moyno...is it a case of "you get what you pay for"?
3) Flow measurement, has anyone seen success with flow meters in slop oil...we see orifice taps get trashed, PD meter vanes get torn up, and coriolis reeds plugged up.

Hi Stew,

1) Yes. Progressive cavity / mono pumps are very suitable to handle dirty fluids.
2) This is just one of the many:

NEMO Pumps have been utilized for many years in the production of oil and gas, in the treatment, cleaning, and further processing of hydrocarbons, also in tank storage units and refineries. NEMO Pumps are fit for the following applications:
> All kinds of drilling muds
> Bentonite
> Oil muds
> Oil-water mixtures with bulky particles

3) Try an electo-magnetic flowmeter. No moving parts, no inner obstructions. When installed correctly (vertical pipe, upwards flow) this will do the trick.

One of the many:

Just get one on a "no cure no pay" or rental base to try.

Hope this helps,

If selecting a progressive cavity pump your will find Mono from England or Australia are leaders in the field. They are now owned by National Oilwell.

A PC pump selection should looked at low speed running to give good life for the stator and rotor. The industry is bedevilled with unscrupulous salesmen who will sell you a high speed pump cheaply. The next eighteen months of spares will exceed the initial price of the pump. Make sure that the running speed of the PC pump doesnt exceed 400 rpm in any selection. Ensure that the mechanical seal is suitable for the duty. Ask for references of long life.

Mono Pumps here in Australia have developed some hard coatings to give extended life. They will give a five year uarantee on components if you specify this in the enquiry. In fact they welcome it as it keeps the "riff raff" out of the market.

As far as flow meters are concerned can you not use a magflow meter. Krohne is a good brand that I have used in slurry service containing 75% solids. They are used for custody transfer let alone slop.
