I've worked for small companies with a lot of learned engineers the last 8 years. I work for a small company now that has an engineering team, but it's very loosely ran. We do more meatball engineering, try quick solutions to customer problems, as opposed to detailed, defined packages that work the 1st time.

I've been trying to get away from the water cooler design...where a manager catches me in the lunch room, they tell me verbally what they want, I go and design it, and then it's rejected because it isn't what they asked for.

I've started writing specification sheets for individual equipment. The 20 things I think are important for each valve, pump, so on. But I need some ideas/examples for the project itself. To have people document the scope, relevant information, things they would like in it. As well a general understanding of how they think the existing equipment works, and needs to be modified.

With our water treatment... "install an RO filter here." why? the customer wants an RO filter here because someone told them that. I'd like a mechanism to reject that...because most of that system is copper.
