Propane vs Bio-Propane

Is Bio-Propane the same as regular propane? I realize propane is a byproduct from the refining of fossil fuels like oil and natural gas whereas bio-propane is a byproduct of refining bio-diesel. Does bio-propane still have to meet the same specs like ASTM D1835 for HD5 propanein the US? Are there any drawbacks to using it in your existing propane bottles and equipment? Does anyone have any real world experience with bio-propane?

It really depends on how good the processor is.
The propane (and butane and ethane and so on) part is identical.
But bio-diesel is known to have some heavier weight molecules in it, so if they haven't been careful in processing then there could be some other things there.
I don't know anyone running straight bio-P, around here it is a blend.

Thanks for the responses. Like you mention there is possible contaminants but I guess that is a possibility with conventional producers of LPG as well.

I've seen scrubber to clean the gas before use , the washing liquid should be caustic soda .

No, the 'extra' stuff in bio-D tends to be waxy. Read about plugged fuel filter issues, especially in cold weather.
