Proposed grading plans

Does anyone have a recommedation for learning to design single family lot grading plans. I am mostly interested in proposed grading. Is this one of those items where you have to learn by doing? Any reference material?

I haven't seen a reference manual on this subject. Learning by doing is the best description of how I learned, but I had knowledgeable people guiding me. Without the help, I probably would have made serious errors. Do you know anyone who could give you guidance? (Other consultant, builder, city engineer)
Does your city have guidlines you could refer to?

Thanks for the reply. The municipalities do have guidelines, however thye are just that.
