Does anyone know how wear resistant this coating is? I'm considering using a black pvd coating, but i'm rather concerned that the finish won't last.

Any opinions would be gratefully appreciated

I'm not sure which type of plating you are using, possibily TiAlCN or other similar materials. If applied properly, the wear resistance is really good. Many PVD platings are actually developed for the tooling industry for wear resistance.

To get an idea of the wear resistance note the hardness values of the various types of PVD coatings ;
TiN - 2300 HV(microhardness)
TiCN - 3000
CrN - 1750
TiAlN - 3500

Here is one more hardness value I could dig out ;
CrC - 1850 HV(microhardness)

Is there anybody who can answer the following on PVD coatings ;
1) What is the corrosion resistance of the PVD coatings (TiN / CrN / CrC) ? Any data on Salt Spray resistance test as per ASTM B117 ?
2) Any data on following properties of PVD coatings
Bond Strength (ASTM C633)
Erosion Resistance (ASTM D968)

I found the corrosion resistance of PVD coatings TiN is highly affected the features of underlay itself, film thickness and component

3Cr13 cuttings by column arc PVD coating TiN 50 min,thickness about 1 u,
Salt Water marinate resistance for 6 hours, some rusted.

with pure Ti 15 minute below TiN, much better in the Test.

CrN might be better.
