Protecting pipe flange faces during transportation/storage

Our current shop specs call out for a coating of DuBois CLG-2 on our pipe flange faces for some reason. While it does have rust/oxidation inhibitors, it requires 350 deg F+ steam cleaning for removal, which may prove itself problematic for field removal, and their salesman even stated that it was a poor choice for this application, as it was designed for high wear abrasion/bearing use.

Can anyone suggest viable alternatives to be used to protect pipe flange faces during shipment and storage, that could be easily removed in the field? Neverseize was used many years back, but caused repeated gasket sealing issues. Whichever material is chosen cannot have any adverse affects on just about any metallic surface, as it will be standard procedure on virtually every power and process piping material to leave the facility.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I deal primarily with welding applications, so this is out of my realm.

This sounds like a good application for a spray-on/peel-off protective coating. There are several choices out there but I've not used them personally. They are basically a soft coating that can be sprayed or brushed on to create a thick sheet that can be peeled-off in one piece. Google will find them.

Thanks for the reply. I had initially dismissed that idea in that I did not think they were available for bare metal. Google quickly dismissed that notion. I forwarded the idea to the E&C guys across the street.
