I am a Junior Engineer and am currently designing the bolted connection of a lifting lug. The connection is subject to shear and bending. My question is, do the bolts on the tension side of the neutral axis have to be designed to account for prying action in accordance with CISC or AISC, or is this not necessary?
I have read elsewhere that prying action need only be considered under direct tension loading. Would this be an example of 'indirect tension'?

Thanks in advance...

If the bolts are resisting a moment where one set of bolts is in tension and the other in compression, you will get a prying action you will have to design for, hands down.

Show us a sketck of the lifting lug with its attachments. an isometric view or the standard top and front views will do.
