pump bay, forebay, chamber definitions

I need to find the appropriate terms to describe some features of a sea water intake structure as it relates to the pumps.

The application is a powerplant using vertical, wet pit, mixed flow pumps for circulating water.

Some specifications need to be re-written because the use of "pump bay", "pump forebay" and "pump chamber" are used in a confusing manner.

Because I'm on a field assignment I do not have access to the full set of standards at my office.

Is there a formal definition of these terms? If so, where? Perhaps a particular HI document?

I might be able to the help needed if I knew exactly where to look. Web searches have been useless for finding anything reliable on this subject.

I found several noteworthy selections.
Municipal consulting engineers have never decided (that I know of) on a standard for terms on an intake station. You are right, it can be very confusing, as it seems each firm wants their terminology to catch on. At the end of the day however, they are mostly doing the same thing and you just need to filter through the buzzwords.

Agreed, confusing - however, I would never use "chamber" as this could refer to a contained area such as a sewage collection pit or similar and is confusing, ie, "pump chamber" to me sounds like a tank in which to collect something.

I would opt for forebay, as fore means to come first, it simply means the first bay in a pump installation.
However, pump bay, inlet bay, pump inlet structure are all suitable - but the main thing is to decide on one term and be consistent.

One of the guys in my home office sent me some info straight from HI standards this morning. HI part 9.8 I believe. Anyway, I've already incorporated it into the specs I have to fix here. Here are the terms.

bay: a portion of an intake structure configured for the installation of one pump.

forebay: is the region of an intake before the individual partitioning of flow into individual suctions or intake bays.

I would agree with the last and to elaborate, there may be a screen or a trash rack separating the forebay from the bays. forebay is usually no enclosed inside the pump station, the bays are. prior to the forebay you may also have an intake channel.
