Guys,

I have 2 duty pumps for a storm water pumping station. Is it absolutely necessary that we design these 2 pumps for 100% of the flow capacity? What are the factors that would determine this decision.

What would depend on the peak load and minimum load and what happens in between. In many instances it is preferable to design for 3 × 50% units which covers a far greater range of flows within the pumps hydraulic capabilities.

It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts. (Sherlock Holmes - A Scandal in Bohemia.)

Perhaps you can add some more details to your question as it is not clear what you are referring to.

In general, you would design a pumping station to pump the design flow with one pump out of service.
So you would need 3x50% as Artisi said.
