For one of the waste water treatment plant, for the Bio-tower feed, the detail engg contractor has selected single volute OH pump ( Flow 1100 m3/hr with head 22 metres and the power rating is 90 kw).The impeller is closed one with Gland packing.

The selected pump BEP is around 1000. Is there any thumb rule to decide whether we need to go for Single volute or Double volute casing? I am in the understanding that for higher flows we need to go for double volute to reduce the radial forces and longer life of the bearings.

Thanks to clarify

first up I would question why is the selected pump running to the right of BEP by 10%, what is the normal operating flow?
Nothing wrong with single volute pumps especially for low discharge pressure.

It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts. (Sherlock Holmes - A Scandal in Bohemia.)

Thank u artisi. Normal flow is 980m3/hr

is 980 still to the right of BEP?
