Does anyone have info regarding the effect of packing size (section area) vs. the wear rate, assuming the same overall length of packing in a gland? Someone told me they got a significantly longer life by sleeving the stuffing (packing) box down and using 1/2" square material in place of the original 3/4" packing (same brand, etc) adding the extra ring so the length was the same.
This doesn't seem to pass the common sense test (contact area, pressure, shaft rpm all equal) but as said before, stranger things have happened in pumps.
Thanks! Keep the wheels on the ground

I'm guessing, but maybe you'd get better heat dissipation with the thinner packing?
