I have a 55 gallon drum of a soultion 15% alcohol and 85% water). I want to pull a vacuum it to recover some of the alcohol vapors The conditions are STP. Looking at the vapor pressures of water and the alcohol, my first thought is to use the alchohol as my seal fluid. Is this a good idea or would the water be the better way to go? Does anyone have any suggestions or directions?

Most 55 gallon drums ARE NOT rated for full vacuum. In general, it is best to use nonflammable liquids as seal fluids where possible. If you are using a liquid ring vacuum pump, then it is possible to use nearly any liquid as the seal fluid. If you use alcohol, you will need to take adequate precautions against fire/explosion hazards. This is definitely a "do not try this at home" type of situation.
