Hi,

Anyone got much experience of silicon oils as heat transfer fluids.
I am working on some systems using positive displacement pumps to move approx. 12 lpm of silicon oil (Sil 180) at 5.5bar. The fluid is anywhere between -30°C & + 150°C.
The pump manufacturer insists the oils are compatible, but they continue to leak.
I'm guessing the temperature range of the fluid may be the issue, causing excessive expansion & contraction.
Anyone know of any pumps that may do the job?

Check the websites of freeze dryer manufacturers like BOC Edwards, Usifroid, Christ and VirTis etc. Silicon oil is used as a heat transfer medium in freeze dryers and the temperature range is +30C to -85C generally and can be higher during sterilization cycle. Have you thought of a buffer vessel?
