Hello, I apologize if this is posted in the wrong forum. I see this is for engineers, etc. I am not an engineer. I am in the process of attempting to repair a plastic panel on my wife's car. I'm buying a "plastic-welding" machine, but in order to use it properly I must identify the type of plastic.

It is: PUR GF 15. I know what PUR is (Polyurethane Resin), but don't understand, nor can I find any info anywhere, on the GF 15 part. I have read that not all PUR can be welded, can anyone help? Thanks, and sorry if this is the wrong place to ask. I don't know where else to go.

could well mean that the resin has a 15% glass fibre content, which will not affect its welding properties much.

Ahh yes, that makes perfect sense. Thanks for the tip.

Greg is correct.

PU has 2 types, thermoplastic and thermoset. Only thermoplastic types can be welded with heat. A simple test is to heat a small piece of the plastic and see if it melts first or just degrades. Take care as degraded PUR produces cyanide gas.

Very good. I had read that not all PUR could be welded, but didn't know how to tell the difference. Also, thanks for the safety tip with the thermoset. Much appreciated.

Ummm

Both types will produce Cyanide if degraded, so avoid smelling fumes from either type when heating them.
