Previously asked this in the plastics engineering industry forum; just realised this forum may be more appropriate.

I'm after a primer on PVC degradation, in particular dehydrochlorination. Is anyone able to recommend any good texts, literature on the subject?

For general polymer topics I can highly recommend the book Plastics Materials by J. A. Brydson, 7th Edition. It mentions dehydrochlorination (p326-330) ISBN 0-7506-4132-0

To be honest the only thing you probably need to know is that PVC loses HCl when heated to give blackening (due to formation of conjugated double bonds) and that stabilisers are used to stop it. Often acid scavengers like CaCO3, dolomite or hydrotalcite are used to adsorb the HCl.
