Hello,

I am looking to have surface oxide tests performed on a group of foundry silicon brass castings in order to try to determine the optimal amount of foundry returns that can be added to each melt, which will produce quality castings.

Sample 1 - a melt with 100% ingot
Sample 2 - a melt with 75% ingot and 25% gates and risers
Sample 3 - a melt with 50% ingot and 50% gates and risers
Sample 4 - a melt with 25% ingot and 75% gates and risers
Sample 5 - a melt with 75% ingot and 25% of clean and dry machined turnings from the same alloy.

Is there a specific quantitative oxide test that I should be asking for ?

Thank you.

How do you de-ox the melt?
We used to pour a tall tapered small diameter part just to look for gas bubbles. We would pour and then split it lenghtwise and see how bad it was.
We also poured little spirals for castability. Doing the two together is key to making sound castings.
