How much abrasive in lb/square foot should I order to sandblast steel pipe in the field to SP 10 (near white) for an epoxy paint system. Sandblasting of pipe spools will take place in a tent at the edge of the work level before erection.

I understand that a 20% allowance should be included for wind losses.

Application will be via an air gun.

1969grad Are you blasting the inside or outside of the pipes and if inside what lengths ?
What is the diameter of pipes 1" or 24" ?
Are they new steel , with or without millscale ?
You could take as a starting guess that 50 Kg will blast 2 squ mtr of rusty surface to a clean white metal ( SA 2 1/2 in UK)
but can double or half according to answers to above questions. Additionally the operator has great effect on useage and you must have at least 150 psi airpressure. Lower pressure can very greatly change useage.
But why go for this almost white finish. A good epoxy paint gives 10 / 15 years cover with a " well dusted " surface which uses less shot and less time. Cheers C Man

corrosionman:

1. Sandblasting outside of pipe only.
2. New pipe. However, pipe is delivered via ocean freight so I am unsure of the surface condition when it actually gets on site.
3. Pipe diameters range from 2" to 20" with some 30". Actually there are several facilities.
4. Site location is within 100 miles of the coast line.
5. Sandblasting requirements are per the owner's specs. Big international oil company so they are never wrong.
