We are working thermal design of Waste heat recovery exchanger (WHRU) with High fin tubes, here WHRU is used for water heating by recovering the heat from Gas turbine exhaust gases (on duct/shell side).

We are performing Flow induced Vibrations calculations as per TEMA section-6.

We have followings query on applicability TEMA Flow induced Vibration correlations for High fin tubes:

1. Whether current TEMA FIV correlations for plain & low fin tube can be applicable for High fin tubes also?. Because TEMA not explicitly mention applicability of its correlation for High fin tubes.
2. While calculating Strouhal Number (S), whether we need to use high fin tube equivalent diameter or tube root diameter?.
3. While calculating turbulent buffeting frequency , vortex shedding frequency, turbulent buffeting amplitude, vortex shedding amplitude & Chen number whether we need to use high fin tube equivalent diameter or tube root diameter?.
4. Also inform us we need to use “transverse pitch” or “longitudinal pitch” to find the Added mass coefficient (Cm), Dimensionless Critical flow velocity factor (D) & Lift coefficient (CL)?
5. Inform us in which of the TEMA Flow induced Vibration correlations we need to use high fin tube equivalent diameter or tube root diameter explicitly.
6. Inform us applicability TEMA table (V-11.2) for pitch ratio greater than 1.5 in high fin tubes & required correction if any.
7. Inform us applicability TEMA table (V-10.1) for “fluid elastic parameter(x)” beyond range given range & required correction if any.
8. Inform us applicability TEMA Flow induced Vibration correlations/graphs for pitch ratio greater than 2.5 in high fin tubes & required correction if any.

Looking forward for valuable guidance on the above queries.

HTRI has information on how to calculate the equivalent diameter and other variables needed to evaluate the critical velocity fot FIV.

Hi Gowda,

In my opinion, we can't use TEMA for HIGH fin tubes vibration analysis. In TEMA under integrally finned tube, low fins tube are mentioned.
