Hi Friends,
This is the first time I am doing connection design for hollow members, therefore please bear with me should this query sound stupid or repeated.
Alright then,
I have to check punching of RHS 200 X 100 X 10 brace on CHS 1000 X 30 chord.
On referring Table 7.4, EN 1993-1-8 : 2005, Eurocode 3 : Design of Steel Structures, Part 1-8: Design of joints.
Right at the bottom of the table we have the range of validity in which beta should be >= 0.4. My sections don't satisfy these equations.
On referring 'Design guide for circular hollow section joints under predominantly static loading, chapter 7' (available online at it states in Table 7.1 that for RHS braces the criteria is only b/t <=40 and h/t<=40 and the beta criteria is only applicable for Transverse plates. My RHS section satisfies these conditions.
In Eurocode it is not specifically mentioned anywhere that this factor 'beta' is for transverse plates only.
Can I use the provision in the Eurocode as it is? I would like to use Eurocode in order to have consistency with my other project calculations.
Please advise,
Regards,
Debayan
