Hello,

At this time I am working on a secant pile wall project using PYWALL. Basically I want to verify if the structural design (No of bars) is adequate to support the maximun bending moment I obtain from PYWALL.

How do you make sure that your structural design (e.g 6 #4 bars) are good enough?. I was told to run the analysis using LPILE but I am not really sure how to deal with this.

If you have any idea please let me know.

Thanks

There are two ways you can approach it.

The first is to design the shoring as soldier pile and ignore the unreinforced pile. Start from scratch with the earth pressures and determine the maximum moment. You can do this using cantilever sheetpile equations adjusted for pier spacing greater than 1 ft. At the least you will verify your PYWALL moment value. This analysis will give you the required section modulus and you can then just pick the beam that has an Sx greater than you need.

Note, with this method, you don't need 3 ksi concrete-you can use 1 sack concrete or low strength. SBWall software from Soil Structure is a good program to use for this design.

The second approach is to use a pier analysis. You may get the required pier section modulus with Sx= (Pi*D^3)/32 Then use 3 ksi concrete. In this method, a 1% of the gross sectional area is recommended to have but it is not required since you are getting the strength from the pier.

Notice in both methods, you are ignoring the presence of the unreinforced secant pier.

FixedEarth,

Thanks for your reply, as It was a very clear answer.

The only prob is reinforced concrete drilled shafts are required in this project by specs, so I can not consider steel sections for this design.
