Question about eDrawings 1

Hello All,

Is there a way to send an eDrawings e-mail depicting the Assembly without sending - or allowing to be seen - the Components List?

I have named all of the parts of the assembly with meaningful names, (i.e. part numbers, vendors, etc.) but I don't want those names exposed to the recipient, as it is proprietary information. I have tried everything short of renaming the parts, but I have not been successful.

Any Ideas?

One possible workaround:

Save a copy of your entire assembly and rename all of the parts before publishing the eDrawing. Copying an entire assembly can readily be done with SW Explorer or by using "File --> Find references".

You can also copy and rename all components in an assembly using "Save As". On the file save pane (were you type in the new file name) there is a button that is labeled "References". Here is where you can specify new paths and names for all of an assembly's components during a "Save As".

Another possibility:

If you are using SWX2003, save the assembly as a part. Then make an eDrawing of that part. Or you could send that part file and they can use the SWX Viewer.

Yes Arlin, my thoughts exactly. At first my thinking was that e-drawings does not let anyone see the "custom properties" (that i am aware of) and as such, should not be able to see the vendors or privy information. However, with naming the parts with important info, you now have a different situation. I agree with Arlin, for this situatin, you should save the assembly as a part. I loaded an assembly and saved it out as a part and generated an e-drawing to make sure that the part tree was not visible, its not.

Can you still see each part in the saved "part" file from the assembly? I like how E-Drawings lets us take an assembly apart and cut section views.

One other thing I thought of (but haven't tried) is saving the assembly as a single parasolid file. Then you can import the parasolid back into SolidWorks and all the parts will be in their right place within the assembly. It's possible you may be able to rename the parts as they are imported, or perhaps you could import them into a special directory and rename them in Explorer (if there aren't too many parts).

On second thought, that would be too cumbersome for large assemblies.

Howdy folks,
With the assembly that I saved as a part, e-drawings will let me section the assembly (part) and slide the secion plane. All of the components appear to be hollow. The move command, however, is greyed out so it looks like it is not able to be used. I have the Beta 2004 e-drawings but I have not had a chance to play with it. I will keep this thread in mind when I tinker with the new e-drawings.
