I have a structural detail drawing that is calling out information for bolts.

It says the following (see images below):

ss_exp_mk4jvw.jpg

ss_exp_2_dt7xey.jpg

Is anyone familiar with these call outs for bolts?

I know what "A325" is, I believe "S.S." is for Stainless Steel, and "EXP." is for Expansion Bolt.

I am not sure what the rest mean.

Suggestions/comments are appreciated.

Is there an abbreviations table in the up front drawings? Your interpretations seem sound.

Below are some guesses about the rest:

H.N. = Hex Nut?
G.H.H. = Galvanized heavy hex?
L.W. = Lock washer?
F.W. = Flat washer? Or fender washer?

I agree with strucbells, but you should be asking the question of whoever drew the details, not us on the internet.

The project plans I am referencing was done by another company in 2009.

Contact, the other company, then. Anybody else is just guessing, an educated guess maybe, but a guess just the same.

What the drawing shows is perhaps less important than what was actually installed. The contractor probably didn't understand those abbreviations either.

hokie66,

It seems to me that we first have to verify the design intent by determining what the designer called out on the drawing. The only place that can be answered is by talking to the designer.

Then field verifying what was actually installed and seeing if that agrees with the drawing. To do this you still have to clarify what the designer intended.

You may find out that there are regional definitions for these call outs, but you still have to determine what the designer wanted to be installed.

I think a site visit should be able to determine if the bolt in the wall are 5/8 stainless steel, and if the bolts through the flange are 5/8 galvanized. Those are the main things.
