Question on formulas for b, Effective Gasket Seating Width in TABLE 2-5.2

Looking at TABLE 2-5.2,

b = b_o when b_o <= 1/4in. (6 mm); b = C_b*SQRT(b_o), when b_o > 1/4in. (6 mm)

I'm confused by the units when b_o is > 1/4in, since the resulting effective width is not just in inches but in SQRT(in).

C_b is a unitless factor, so this does not change the output.

What am I missing? If I'm only supposed to take the square root of the value an not the unit, that is not clear (and not typical).

Thanks, Tim

timsch, just consider b in units of length, ignore units for the intermediate steps. No need to make it harder than it is :)

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

Well, it gets harder than it needs to be when I code these formulas into a Mathcad spreadsheet and the units don't work out....

And that's after I get over the shakes from thinking of ignoring units. That engineering training on UNITS must have been been pretty effective.

Well, then for your purposes assign units of sqrt(inch) to factor Cb.

The equation for b is different for metric and imperial units doh!!!
