I have a question on the performance of two types of gearing mechanisms...

If you were to compare a chain and sprocket system eg bicycle to that of "gears" (of equivalent size) is there any difference between the two methods, on a performance comparison??

Does one method have any advantages/disadvantages over the other??

This relates to a bicycle design which could incorporate either system..... just wondering which has the potential for better performance.

cheers

wizeguy,

For small loads, a properly designed chain drive is usually more efficient than gearing, plus it is cheaper to implement.

The centre distance of the chain can be increased dramatically
