Question on Grinding a Weld Type

For a CJP Single-bevel-groove weld (top of pg 8-45 in the AISC 15th, top of pg 8-44 in the 14th), if you want both sides smooth, can you put the grind line above the bubble like you can below the single bevel symbol? (see enclosed sketch)

If not, what do you do to indicate you want it ground smooth? We have often used the single-bevel symbol with no dimensions to indicate full penetration, but how do you communicate that you need the far side smooth?

Yes, you can do that, provided there is reasonable access where you want the grinding done.

My only other suggestion is to put a "G" above the flat line if you specifically want grinding. There are other less used options:
