If you are talking underground piping, all you need is pvc piping that is listed for fire protection use. Make sure you are using piping with the appropriate pressure ratings for the working pressure of the system. Additionally, when using pvc piping with slip joints, the thrust blocks are very important to keep the piping from "blowing out" during testing.

If it is listed pipe and is designed correctly NFPA has no problem with it.
