I am designing a pole frame house and have some questions about selecting the correct pole diameter for load purposes. I have reviewed both "pratical Pole Building Construction" and "low-cost Pole Building construction" books, and they fail to mention how to size a pole. One book advises that the AWPI says that a "six inch pole" (one assumes they are talking about base diameter, not tip diameter) is rated at 8000# per pole combined weight. I am designing a 'saltbox' style strawbale infilled wall system, and my calculations came up bewtwwen 8800# on the one story outer pole, to 32,500# on the two story middle poles. I know I just need to upsize the poles, but how much?

Thanks in advance,
Jon Overlin

True "poles" aren't used all that much these days - too hard to work with - round and all that.

If you are not an engineer - seek help or if you are - look into

Multiple ply 2x6 or 2x8 columns - makes framing much easier
Rural Builders is a good resource (magazine)
NFBA.org - very good web site

Good Luck
