Hello everyone. I'm graduating this May from Washington state university with a electrical engineering degree focused on power engineering. WSU started this dual masters program with Zurich University of Applied Science (ZHAW) and I'm interested in jumping into my masters right now or just a year from now. I'm interested in renewables and sustainability but also in industrial engineering and operations management. I want to merge my interests and go towards a career path where I can do the work I enjoy but I'm not sure how to go about doing it.
Couple of things I looked into is that ZHAW offers MS in engineering focused on Business Engineering (BE) and Energy and Environment (EE). I could even specialize on operations management for the BE and process engineering for the EE. I also looked at Calpoly SLO and they offer an industrial engineering (IE) degree.
Now my questions are:
1) Would it be a smart idea to get both BE and EE masters? In my mind I can see that the EE would complement the BE because the EE focuses on sustainability and environment and process which could help the BE by making any operation a lot more efficient and green but I want some experienced opinion on that.
2)Would it be a smart thing to do to go to ZHAW? I have looked up the university and it seems legit but I want some reassurance that I can find a job after graduation. Same goes for Calpoly SLO.
3) Process engineering: is it just for chemical engineers or can I go for it too with my electrical background? what do process engineers do?
4) Job outlook on IE is slim in the US for the next 10 years according to the bureau of labor statistics. I don't mind going to foreign countries to work, in fact that would be great. But I don't know the job outlook for IEs in Europe or Asia. Can someone please enlighten me?
5) How can I get some good experience towards operations management/IE career path? Where I live there is hardly any manufacturing but there are big engineering plants (power, research, nuclear) so I was thinking maybe facilities engineering type job might help me get some form of relatable experience.
