Hi, everyone,

right now i am using 2-D 4-node cohesive elements to simulate the fracture of a low carbon steel. But the behavior of the cohesive elements are kind of weird.

I defined the traction-separation based constitutive response including the damage initiation and damage evolution behavior on the cohesive elements. But for certain failure criterion, only two nodes can separate, the other two nodes never separate. I figured out the reason is that once the two nodes separated, the other two nodes were compressed a little bit, but still in tension (just less tension, i.e less distance between them). So this two nodes never satisfy the failure criterion. But I do not know how to avoid such problems.

If you happen to know how to solve it, please let me know.

Thank you in advance.
