Hi All,

We have a situation during detailed engineering, that the Quick opening closure as per FEED is to be designed as per ASME sec VIII Div 1 and "U" stamped. However, we found that the ASME Sec VIII Div 1 is applicable only till pressure limiting to 20 MPa. Our design pressure is 21.5MPa.

Also it is refereed in ASME B31.4 sec 404.7.1 that "Quick opening closures shall be equipped with safetylocking devices in compliance with Section VIII, Division 1 UG-35(b) of the ASME Boiler and PressureVessel Code."

Is it reuqired that Quick opening closure shall be as per ASME Sec VIII Div 2 rather than ASME Sec VIII Div 1.

Review ASME VIII Div 1, U-1, (d) and ascertain whether the purchasing documentation being used provides for "additional design principles and construction practices."

Shouldn't be too hard to get if the right vendor is selected:

Thanks SJones for the quick reply.

The purchasing documentation (i.e the specification and data sheets) mentions only ASME Sec VIII Div 1 and does not calls for any additional design principles and construction practices.

Our main concern is do we really need to use ASME Sec VIII Div 2 for the current design of 215 barg. Does any code specifies the same other than BPV codes.

What Steve said. Quick Closures are a 'catalog item', and the manufacturer has already done the engineering for you. - ASSuming you buy from a reputable mfr.

We've used quick opening closures on pig traps at up to about 150barg - there have been many incidents with these in the past. Do your operators feel comfortable with these at 215barg ? Wouldnt a regular end flange be more reliable, even if it means a longer time to open and close the barrel end ?
