I am hoping to find a recommendation from some of you more versed in metallurgy for a quick reference book relating primarily to steels. I am pretty un-seasoned when it comes to comparing one composition of a steel versus another from, and would like to learn more "tribal knowledge," if that makes any sense. I am not uneducated, just not a lot of time in the business and no one I work with to draw knowledge from. I can run stress calcs, impacts etc. with no problem, but I need more general knowledge in material applications (why use one duplex versus another?).

I really want to find a book (or web site) with more general application knowledge. I deal primarily with different compositions of 310ss, 316ss, super duplex, Hast. C, Monel and a few others.

Is there a decent "for dummies" book that gives general suggestions that describes what each composition is good at? Why I would use one form of Duplex over another?

Thanks in advance

I would suggest, from the same source, "Metals Handbook, Desk Edition".

Stainless Steels for Design Engineers
Author(s): Michael F. McGuire

ASM Handbook Volume 01: Properties and Selection: Irons, Steels, and High-Performance Alloys

ASM Specialty Handbook: Stainless Steels
Editor(s): J.R. Davis

Those are the three that I refer to the most.
Join ASM and buy them at the member price.

Appreciate all the replies. I will do some more research and pick a few.

Thanks

All of the references mentioned above are excellent. I think the book by McGuire is probably the one that most closely fits your needs.
