Quicklime Slaking

Hi All,

I need to design a dust collecting/extraction system (Including ducting and fan selection) for a slaking ball mill that slakes Quicklime material and want to know how much dust and steam comes out of the slaking ball mill that I can design correct ducting and select a proper fan. The information is as below:

Material: Quicklime (CaO 95%)
Dry Input to the mill: 2 tph
Concentration: 20% w/w
Water Temp: 25 C
Water: Raw Water

Any thoughts or any useful references?

It is likely not something you can calculate a priori. Steam generation and entrainment of dust particles will be due to localized hot spots, and will be a function of lime particle size, particle size distribution, feed rate, tank agitation rate, etc.

Secondly, at 20% you will end up somewhere in the 170-190F range of temperature. You will have some natural wisping of water vapor anyways at that temp.

Is this installation inside? Ours was outside, so we didn’t have to worry about ventilation.

Edit: If you are based in North America, you can contact Brenntag. They supply both CaO and Ca(OH)2, and have some experience with slaking equipment. They helped in some of the initial phases of slaker design.
 
Hi Guys,
I'm based in New Zealand now.
It is located outdoors. Almost in all clients' sites, there are some Wet Scrubbers for quicklime slakers that collect the dust and sucks the steam out of the slaker mill.
there are not many articles published in lime subject.
I'll try to contact these guys to see what happens.

You may need to check with your local regulatory authority to ensure this does not need to be a newly permitted source for an air permit. If "everyone" around you is using wet scrubbers, then it seems to be that it is possible that is due to an emissions requirement. (Either that, or they are recovering the final 1% of CaO that is dusted out the top). It wouldn't hurt to check.

I checked with the guys and they are saying that Emission requirements forced them to use a dust extraction system (Wet Scrubber). Again no difference in my scope as I need to know the amount of steam and dust coming out of the slaking system. how should I calculate it?

Solve for xH20 (tons per Hour) and you've got your answer

Now with bench top lab test, you can get closer to what you are dealing with.

I need to find out amount of Dust and Steam coming out of slaking process not amount of water required for slake to be done.
