Hi, I want to know if the fracture mechanics "crack arrest" concept is a property of the material or it depends on other factors, and if the "pop-in" shown by the fracture mechanics tests specimens just before they break has something in common with the crack arrest?

Thanks.

What is the reason for your question? Normally, crack arrest is used in dynamic fracture conditions versus static fracture conditions (like KIc). Dynamic fracture testing can be instrumented Charpy V-notch, drop weight tear testing and the explosive bulge test. The results from these tests are used to qualitatively define a minimum crack arrest temperature.

Qualitative tests as mentioned above are not a specific material property parameter, because the tests depend on stress conditions, and loading rate. These tests do allow one to characterize the fracture behavior under dynamic loading conditions in service.
