LIGHT METALLIC PAINT APPLICATION IN AML PAINT SHOP Tuesday, July 24, 2001
THE CURRENT SITUATION IN AML (NISSAN SOUTH AFRICA) IS THAT WE CANNOT PAINT LIGHT METALLIC COLOURS THROUGH OUR EXISTING REA BASECOAT APPLICATOR WITHOUT AN OFF COLOUR SITUATION BETWEEN THE REA APPLICATION AND THE NORMAL MANUAL APPLICATION METHOD.
WE HAVE TRAILED VARIOUS TYPES OF PAINT FORMULATIONS AND DIFFERENT SETTINGS ON THE MACHINE BUT THE OFF COLOUR SITUATION BETWEEN A REA ‘SINGLE GATE ‘APPLICATION AND A MANUAL APPLICATION STILL EXIST.
WE HAVE EVEN TRIED TO PAINT WITHOUT THE ELECTROSTATIC EFFECT BUT NO SUCCESS.
THE BASIC LAYOUT IN OUR AUTO BOOTH IS AS FOLLOWS:

APPLICATION

REA EXTERIOR RANDSBURG REA ELECTROSTATIC APPLICATOR
APPLICATION GUN TYPE: FP9
NOTE: THERE IS NOT A MANUAL METALLIC APPLICATION
CLEARCOAT AFTER THE REA APPLICATION TO SIMULATE THE
INTERIOR SAME COLOUR AS IN TOTAL MANUAL APPLICATION.

OVEN
OUR APPLICATION SYSTEM IS A ‘SINGLE GATE’ APPLICATION WHERE THE TOTAL METALLIC FILM BUILDS (12 – 16 MICRONS) IS APPLIED WITHIN ONE STATION, WITH NO MANUAL STATION AFTERWARDS.
REFERRING TO YOUR MANUAL, (USER’S MANUAL FOR AUTO. R-E-A GUN UNIT FP9, 1993) THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS ARE MADE:
“ The FP9 gun has been developed to coat car bodies by mounting the gun unit on a robot or automatic machine and allows for some metallic paint application.”
“ With the exception of water-borne paint and high aluminum content coating materials, metallic paint can be sprayed”.
CAN YOU PLEASE SUPPLY US WITH THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:
1) WHAT IS THE LIMIT AS FAR AS ALUMINUM CONTENT COATINGS IS CONCERNED, ALL LIGHT METALLIC COLOURS HAVE A HIGH ALUMINUM CONTENT TO ACHIEVE THE COLOUR?
2) IS THERE OTHER REA GUNS AVAILABLE TO ENABLE US TO SPRAY HIGH ALUMINUM CONTENT COATINGS OR LIGHT METALLIC COATINGS WITHOUT THE COLOUR DIFFERENCE?
3) IS THERE A RATIO BETWEEN ALUMINUM CONTENT AND OTHER PIGMENTS IN A PAINT FORMULA TO ACHIEVE, IN LIGHT METALLIC’S APPLICATION WITH THE CURRENT EQUIPMENT?
4) WHAT IS THE ALTERNATIVE, IF YOU CANNOT HELP US, WITH RELATION TO FACILITY, EQUIPMENT OR PAINT TECHNOLOGY TO ENABLE US TO PAINT LIGHT METALLIC COLOURS?
YOUR ASSISTANCE WILL BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED
