Hello,

I am working on a Pig Launcher/Receiver under the CSA Z662 design code and am unsure if "Transition" fittings are allowed per CSA Z245-11 Steel Fitting code. For MSS-SP 75 fittings it clearly states the use of "Transition" pieces but I cant find any language for or against in CSA 245-11. Can anyone share insight on this?

By "Transition" Fitting I mean to make an extruded pipe without any extrusions, essentially a pipe that is certified to the fitting code.

Section 1.3 of MSS-SP 75: "1.3 The term “welding fittings” applies to butt-welding fittings such as elbows, segments of elbows, reducing elbows, caps, tees, single or multiple-outlet extruded headers, reducers, and extensions and transition sections(1).

The reason I am looking into this is at the shop I work at we are able to roll & weld plate and perform all the necessary heat treat to certify it to the CSA Z245-11 Fitting code. We make extruded pipe on a daily basis. Currently pricing for CSA pipe is making us uncompetitive, but if we are able to make our own "Transition" fitting pieces in house we would be able to get more aggressive due to controlling the labor pricing.

If anyone can share information on this it would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks,
NZayyad

NZayyad,

Not exactly sure of your question.
CSA Z662 accepts MSS-SP-75 fitting with limitations in terms of Grade, size and notch toughness.
If you are working with Pig Traps, the term 'Reducer' will be more appropriate than "Transition' fitting. The Reducer is the part that will come in between the major and the Minor barrel. The term 'Transition' is used for a fitting that joins a higher Grade lesser WT to a lesser Grade heavier WT for the same pressure rating.
CSA Z662 considers the traps as piece of pipe. You can therefore, follow the rules for pressure design of the reducer same as pipe. There is a whole list of Pipe specifications from CSA Z245.1 to ASTM to API that is acceptable to CSA Z662. Make sure to know the Category Class(CatI/CatII/CatIII) of the specified Trap and select the reducer material spec.
Check with the local regulator where the pi traps will be installed if the reducer requires CRN registration. Every province is different.
You said your shop has capability to certify fittings to CSA Z245.11. That's a good news. In that case, you don't have to look further.
Check if the reducers will fall into the list of standard fittings. Table 13 covers a wide range of sizes. If not(because of different trap sizes), follow the rules on CSA Z245.11.
