"zoom extents" "zoom all" functions not zooming in far enoug

Hello,

I have a part drawn in AutoCAD 14. When I hit the "zoom extents" or "zoom all" toolbar button, it should zoom in on the part as far as possible, i.e., make the part almost as large as the screen.

However, it seems something is preventing this from happening. I think there is a small "point" or entity somewhere in the drawing that is preventing the "zoom extents" and "zoom all" function from zooming "as far in" on the part as it should. However, I cannot find the entity or point, so I can delete it.

I tried locking, freezing, and turning off the part layer, zooming in via zoom all, zoom extents, etc.. , and then selecting & deleting anything in the screen area (whether I can see it or not) however, this did not help.

Can anyone please tell me if there is a Lisp program or some other program that can "clean" an AutoCAD file of any points or entities that might be preventing the zoom extents or "zoom all" function from zooming in on a part as far as it should ?

Has anyone else experienced this problem ?

I would appreciate any advice,

Thanks for your help.

John

Do you have some objects on a layer that is turned "off"? These are considered in a Zoom Extents. Frozen layers are not.

You might have some "unselectable" object, such as blank text. You could wblock selected items, which should purge the unwanted items from the new file.

All layers on and unfrozen.
Zoom all.
Erase ALL
then R W and pick a window around the stuff you want to keep.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your replies.

I only have one layer turned off, which is some annotations, but this layer is also frozen and locked, and it does not seem to be affecting anything.

I did not think of a line of blank text possibly causing the problem. How do I find and delete a line of blank text? Can you please tell me what you mean by "wblock selected items". I am familiar with the standard purge procedure, but I am not sure what you mean by "wblock".

From Mike:
"All layers on and unfrozen.
Zoom all.
Erase ALL
then R W and pick a window around the stuff you want to keep."

Can you please tell me what is meant by "R W" ? If I erase everything, how do I get the objects back that I want to keep ?

I would appreciate any other comments from anyone, I am still not 100% sure what is causing this, but I am guessing there is a point or entity that I cannot find or delete.

Thanks again,
John

John-
The command "WBLOCK" (write block) creates a new drawing of just the objects you select. Actually a blank line of text shows up as a dot and is selectable, in 2005 anyway.

Mike's approach should also work to get rid of "invisible" objects. The "r" during the selection prompt puts you in the "remove" mode to remove items from the selection set. W while selecting is of course "window".

I've had this sort of a problem when I had an arc with radius dim...just a small part of the arc was present, the but center counted as a point in the drawing.

Try making pdmode 33 and pdsize 1000 then regen and zoom extents. This may show a point or node that is doing this to you.

As CarlB kindly pointed out, you don't _actually_ erase everything.

First you tell the ERASE command that you _intend_ to erase everything, with the 'all' response. But you don't complete the command. When the prompt comes back, you use the 'r' subcommand to remove stuff from the selection set, and you use the 'w' window subcommand to delineate the stuff you want to keep. Everything outside the window will still be erased.

Like this:
ERASE<space>
ALL<space>
r<space>
w<space>
<pick a window>
<enter>

Thank goodness for the 'U' command. ;-)

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your help.

I will give all the suggestions a try.

Sincerely,
John

Hello everyone,

I tried all of the suggestions, but it did not seem to help. I don't think it is a node or point that is not showing up. I think it must be something else.

These are assembly, 3D solid, exploded view drawings, with annotations (but even with the annotations deleted, I still have the problem). I have all the parts on a Southwest Isometric view, in the world coordinate system. I put the annotations on the "view UCS" because they were easier to read that way. Please let me know if anyone has any other ideas as to what might be causing the problem.

Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that they are exploded view drawings, but the "zoom extents" or "zoom all" is not zooming in all the way. I have to zoom manually, to get the drawing to fill the screen. I want the people I send the DWG's too to be able to use the zoom extents toolbar, and have it quickly blow the drawing up all the way.

Thanks for your help.

You might have to define a view and provide a button to zoom to that view.

If it was a 3d drawing, try looking at it in different isometric views to see if there is an object out there. I would be willing to take a look at the drawing too if you want.

Hi everyone,

Thanks CDH, it would be great if you could take a quick look at the drawing for me. Please let me know where I can email the DWG.

Thanks
John
