R&D enginneer with Mechanical backgound!

Hi everyone,

I am a PhD graduate in mechanical engineering field. My research direction is smart materials, something related to shape memory alloy and piezoelectric materials. Recently, I know some positions in US related to design and development of the medical products. They require someone using finite element analysis and design technique.

Since I am not in medical engineering background, I know nothing about medical products. I have some questions on the top of my head. The bio-medical industry is good now and the future? My friend told me the industry here is so narrow, it might be difficult for you to change from one company to another, because of the few competitors. Is it true? The pay is good, compared with some traditional industry, such as oil industry.

I am just finishing up my undergrad degree in Biomedical Engineering, but even so I may be able to provide some small bit of insight.

It is true though that the room is not very crowded when it comes to many specific device types, but there are many different device and research areas to work in if you are willing and able to be versatile.
