R&D position with mechanical background

Hi everyone (I help my wife to ask),

I am a PhD graduate in mechanical engineering field. My research direction is smart materials, something related to shape memory alloy and piezoelectric materials. Recently, I know some positions in US related to design and development of the medical products. They require someone using finite element analysis and design technique.

Since I am not in medical engineering background, I know nothing about medical products. I have some questions on the top of my head. The bio-medical industry is good now and the future? My friend told me the industry here is so narrow, it might be difficult for you to change from one company to another, because of the few competitors. Is it true? The pay is good, compared with some traditional industry, such as oil industry.

As a PhD, your options are already limited. However, medical prostheses and devices would seem to be a growing field.

One can imagine that there might still be an even better stent to be had, particularly since baby-boomers are at that critical age for heart disease.

Artificial heart valves are still a developing field.

Likewise, various devices for self and auto injection of drugs and therapies are still relatively new.
