All,

we have a new vessel just arrived at site, not in operation. However, the design temperature needs to be increased by 50F, which will not impact thickness, MAWP or hydrotest pressure that was done.
I believe a R stamp is required even it is new vessel per NBIC Part 3.4, and attach the R stamp next to the existing nameplate. But someone is thinking just to replace the existing nameplate with a new nameplate that has the new temperature. I don't think that is right. What is your opinion ?

This is a Regulatory or Jurisdictional concern and not with the NBIC. The definition of a re-rating (alteration) and nameplate revision does not concern an increase in MDMT temperature only a decrease in MDMT. Deratings are outside the scope of the NBIC.

I believe he is referring to increasing the Max. allowable working temperature not the MDMT....therefore NBIC shall be used.

An R-stamp should be used, and a second nameplate should be added adjacent to the original nameplate. The new nameplate will spell out the altered design conditions (temperature), and will be documented with an R-Form. This approach ensures that full traceability is maintained.

If you just go and replace the nameplate, then everything that ties that vessel back to the original U-stamp / MDR / manufacturer will be destroyed.

I just wonder why a max design temp. would be stamped on the name plate that is lower than that permitted for the material of construction and the specified max design pressure?
