You do realise that smaw joint welding is not a preferred choice?

For Railroad welding thermite is the preferred choice, It is quicker and cleaner.

Agreed if you're talking maintenance joints, not when renewing rails on-site.
Either way, if the question is about surface welding, this discussion is moot.
