Rain chains?

Has anyone ever sized a rainchain for flow? I have a project where client is considering instead of your traditional downspouts. I've seen them on projects but I don't recall been involved in the sizing. With so many factors (due to the so many choices in style and configuration), my initial approach would be to rely on manufacturer reported values (with some factor of safety to be included).

As a significant part of my Geotechnical recommendations for foundations on either expansive or collapsible soils deals which Control & Removal of excess water from foundation areas, I DETEST rainchains. Fits right up there with Scuppers for roof drainage.
My question would be ... What happens to the water that dribbles down these chains? How is the foundation NOT compromised?

Completely understandable and valid points. I believe that as civil designers, its imperative that geotechnical and structural recommendations are considered and implemented accordingly (and early) including constant coordination/communication with available review time for this disciplines to comment before even draft construction plans are issued.

In the case of my installation, the rain chain's water would fall on a planter that includes a splash pad. The planter is basically a concrete bath tub (including concrete bottom) with its own area drains and larger overflow drain for larger storms.

Seems like they would become giant icicles in freezing weather... imparting a huge point load to gutter and eave structure.
