so i am making a soft-start/ramping for various motors and i noticed that when the SCR fires the motor and detects a zero crossing for a ramp step, it spikes. is this a hardware or software program? how would i be able to fix this?

What type are your various motors?

If they are three-phase asynchronous induction motors, you are in for a very long journey full of surprises. If, on the other hand, you are doing a single-phase or DC version, it is straightforward.

Anyhow, how are we supposed to tell? Your description of the problem is very vague. Tell us more. Motor type, voltage range, power range, frequency could be nice to know. What do you mean by spiking? Do fuses blow or do you have uncontrolled acceleration? Are your spike voltage spikes or current spikes? Scope pictures?
