Hi there, I posted here a while ago and was pointed in the direction of Raster to Vector conversion for converting house plans that I regualrly convert onto Autocad.

I donwloaded the free version of Wintopo which works fine in principal, but it gives poor copying, to the extend that it's quicker for me to insert the image and trace over it using polar lines, which is quite tedious at times.

Is there any tips wintopo users can give me, or is it a fact of life that raster to vector isn't very good at converting drawings?

Thanks in advance.

In my experience with Raster to Vector, it pretty much sucks. As you have found out, the editing takes longer than if you were to trace it.

Vector to raster is easy but raster to vector is messy. It take lot of complicated AI algorithm for a computer to recognize even a simple line drawn in raster. To get good result your raster image must be very clean and accurate at first place. Even the bad boys at Autodesk have given up on fully auto convert raster to vector. They come up with semi-auto raster to vector program - Autodesk Raster Design. Semi-auto conversion means that the user have to interactive feedback the software to get a more accurate result.

Scan the image, insert and trace.....I have tried quite a few conversion softwares, and they basically all fall over in varying degrees.

I could probably do the convertion for you. If you wanted to out-source.
